The SOSL returns to the Lionel Wendt stage on 14th March 2026 with Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, the massive and revolutionary Eroica. The Eroica Symphony embodies heroism and victory not just for Napoleon (to whom it was first dedicated) or for Beethoven, but for music itself in symphonic form. The Eroica represents the struggle, grief, death, freedom, joy and victory of the human state all in one monumental work that is one of Beethoven’s greatest achievements. Under the guidance of Dushyanthi Perera, the SOSL will take up the challenge of bringing you this seminal and groundbreaking work in the symphonic genre. This concert also features Soundarie David Rodrigo, one of Sri Lanka’s foremost pianists, performing yet another classic by Beethoven: his piano concerto in C major. In this work we see the younger composer acknowledging the influences of his past—Haydn and Mozart—yet looking to the future, in one of the most joyful piano concertos in the repertoire. Yet another important work will be performed for the first time in Sri Lanka: Emilie Mayer’s Overture in D minor. A master of orchestral composition, Mayer was known for her bold style and confidence, and her ability to write symphonic music—as opposed to salon music, which was then what was expected of women.
